Internship: Entry Qualifications

Internships are designed for those who have recently completed a recognised postgraduate program. However, one internship is specifically reserved for a student completing his or her postgraduate conservation course in the same year as commencing the internship. Students seeking placements during a postgraduate conservation course elsewhere are also eligible to apply. Placements should be for at least six months.

Internships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a second year. Progress from the first to second year is by mutual agreement. One internship will be fully funded with a maintenance grant. There will be limited funding available for other internships and candidates will be required to find the balance if funding.

Projects to date include the manufacturing processes of medieval tin relief, familiarisation with gas chromatography (as opposed to handing samples to a technician to run), an analysis of a 17th century pharmaceutical cabinet, as well as in-depth research on the materials, techniques and context of individual paintings.

Internships are also offered to those intending to pursue a career in conservation science. Other internships are offered in connection with specific projects in which the Institute is engaged.
